Job Description

Brief description of the organization

Yazda Iraq is a local organization registered in both Iraq and the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. It operates as a subsidiary of the global Yazda organization and adheres to the same mission: supporting vulnerable communities, particularly those affected by genocide and mass atrocities. In Iraq/KRI, Yazda implements programs focused on advocacy, legal assistance, humanitarian aid, and community and survivor empowerment initiatives. The Country Director leads these efforts, ensuring they align with organizational goals and respond effectively to local needs.

Background

Yazda is implementing a four-month GIZ/CPS-funded project titled “Strengthening Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS) through Dissemination of the MHPSS Needs Assessment, Capacity Building and Family Therapy”. The project builds on the MHPSS Needs Assessment conducted by Yazda in partnership with GIZ and the Family Therapy Capacity Building Training for Psychologists delivered in January 2026.

Under Component 3, the project will implement a structured family therapy programme for seven survivor families over four months, delivered with Yazda's MHPSS psychologists in safe and confidential settings.

Job Purpose

The Family Therapy Consultant will lead the design and implementation of the family therapy programme and provide clinical supervision to Yazda's psychologists, helping participating families strengthen communication, mutual support and healthy coping strategies.

Main Responsibilities

  1. Develop a culturally adapted family therapy framework and implementation plan.
  2. Develop or adapt family assessment, therapy plan, session record and progress monitoring tools.
  3. Support the selection of seven families through Yazda's referral and case management system, with informed consent.
  4. Conduct initial family assessments jointly with Yazda's psychologists and develop individual therapy plans.
  5. Facilitate and co-facilitate regular family therapy sessions over four months.
  6. Review progress, adjust therapy plans and refer families for specialised support where needed.
  7. Provide regular clinical supervision and case consultation to Yazda's psychologists.
  8. Ensure confidential and accurate documentation of sessions.
  9. Submit monthly progress reports and a final report with lessons learned and a short practice guide.
  10. Comply with Yazda's safeguarding, PSEA and data protection policies.

  • Master's degree or higher in clinical psychology, psychotherapy, marriage and family therapy or a closely related field
  • Recognised training or certification in family/systemic therapy
  • At least 5 years of clinical experience delivering family therapy, preferably with families affected by conflict, displacement, trauma or ambiguous loss
  • Proven experience providing clinical supervision and mentoring to psychologists
  • Sound knowledge of trauma-informed care, the IASC Guidelines on MHPSS, and survivor-centred and do-no-harm principles
  • Experience working in Iraq/KRI, preferably with Yazidi communities; strong cultural sensitivity
  • Fluency in Kurdish (Kurmanji/Badini) and/or Arabic, and good written English for reporting
  • Availability for the full four-month period and to travel to Sinjar and IDP camps
