Job Description

Sustainable Peace Foundation (SPF) is an Iraqi feminist Non-governmental Organisation (NGO) striving to build and sustain peace through vertical and horizontal approaches and participatory methods; addressing root causes of tensions and conflicts challenging positive peace in Iraq. SPF strives to achieve this by working on the grassroots level to reinstate and strengthen the lost trust between Iraq’s diverse ethno-religious communities; increase community resilience, empower and building the capacities of the very effected communities so they can mitigate and transform conflicts through dialogue and non-violent means.

SPF strives to achieve these objectives by working with vulnerable groups such as, youth, women and girls, people with special needs and IDPs through developing their capacities to take leadership roles and to actively participate in the peace and reconciliation processes; economically empower communities by offering them vocational trainings and providing them with livelihood means to ensure stability and a dignified living standard.

SPF also strives to engage local authority and security actors with the local communities through advocacy, round table dialogue sessions and developing local peace mechanisms and structures capable to acts as soundboards conveying their communities’ needs and challenges. Another pillar of SPF’s efforts is to support and capacitate Iraq’s civil society for example, SPF provide the technical coordination and the secretariat of Nineveh Peace Forum, which it is a founder.  

SPF also provides consultations for local and international NGOs on peacebuilding and social cohesion programming, such as: context analysis, needs assessments, actor and service mapping etc.

SPF’s focuses on minority protection, but through its Do-no-Harm approach, which ensures that SPF programming and implementation creates cohesion instead of doing harm.

 

Project Aims

The project aims to empower conflict-affected young women and men (18–30) in Mosul—particularly West Mosul—by strengthening their resilience, civic participation, and livelihoods through arts and cultural heritage initiatives that promote diversity, non-violence, social cohesion, and Positive Peace. It supports youth to become proactive community actors who celebrate Mosul’s shared cultural heritage, counter polarising narratives, and contribute to improved inter- and intra-community relations through practical, income-generating cultural activities.

 

Purpose of Assignment

The purpose of this assignment is to design and deliver one 1 x two-day training workshop for 20 youth participants (50% women, 50% men) on:

  • Diversity and cultural heritage in Mosul as a foundation for social cohesion and Positive Peace;
  • Cultural tour guiding skills (ethical, inclusive, conflict-sensitive guiding); and
  • Effective use of the Qellayta Diversity and Culture Tour guide as a tool to promote and communicate inclusive cultural narratives.

The trainer will equip participants with practical competencies to safely and confidently conduct diversity-oriented cultural tours and use Qellayta Diversity and Culture Tour Guide to amplify positive narratives that celebrate Mosul’s plural identity.

 

Terms of Reference

- Contracting Organisation: Sustainable Peace Foundation (SPF)

- Location: Mosul District, Nineveh Governorate (anticipated delivery through Qellayta Youth Centre for Diversity and Culture / agreed training venue)

- Duration / Level of Effort: Delivery: 2 training days (in-person); Preparation: development/adaptation of agenda, materials and tools (estimated 2–4 working days, depending on the final package); and Reporting: post-training report (estimated 1 working day)

- Target Group: 20 young women and men (18–30), selected by SPF, with gender balance (50/50). 

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Design the workshop methodology and agenda using participatory, youth-friendly approaches (interactive sessions, group work, simulations, field-based practice where feasible).
  • Develop or adapt training materials aligned to Mosul context, inclusive citizenship principles, and conflict sensitivity (Do-No-Harm).
  • Deliver training content across three integrated strands:
  • Understanding diversity, identity, social cohesion, and Positive Peace in Mosul;
  • Cultural tour guiding fundamentals (storytelling, inclusive narration, visitor engagement, ethics, safeguarding, respectful representation of communities, accessibility considerations);
  • Practical orientation on the Qellayta Diversity and Culture Tour Guide (content navigation, using the guide during tours, capturing feedback, and promoting positive narratives through responsible communication).
  • Integrate safeguarding and PSEA, safe-space practices, and gender-responsive facilitation throughout.
  • Administer and analyse pre/post assessments (knowledge/attitude/skills) and facilitate a short end-of-training evaluation.
  • Submit a concise final training report with results, learning outcomes, participant feedback, and actionable recommendations.

Coordination and Support: the trainer will work under the supervision of SPF’s Project Manager / designated focal point and coordinate closely with SPF staff responsible for logistics, participant management, and the Tour Guide/communications component.

Ethical, Safeguarding and Quality Standards: the assignment must comply with SPF policies, including Code of Conduct, safeguarding, PSEA, confidentiality, and conflict-sensitive programming. The trainer must ensure a respectful learning environment and equitable participation of young women and men.

 Deliverables

  1. Training design package (submitted in advance, in soft copy):
  • Final agenda (2 days) with timings and session objectives
  • Session plans and facilitation notes
  • Training slides/handouts and exercises (participant workbook, if applicable)
  • Practical activity plan (role-plays, mock tour practice, app practice tasks)
  1. Assessment tools:
  • Pre/post test (or equivalent learning assessment)
  • End-of-training evaluation form (plus facilitation guide for feedback session)
  1. Delivery of the 2-day workshop for 20 participants (50% women, 50% men).
  2. Final training report (within an agreed timeframe after delivery), including:
  • Attendance list (disaggregated by gender)
  • Summary of content delivered and methods used
  • Assessment results (pre/post highlights)
  • Key participant feedback
  • Strengths, challenges, and recommendations for next steps (including how to support participants to conduct tours and use the app safely and effectively)


Required Qualifications

  • University degree in a relevant field (e.g., Social Sciences, Peacebuilding, Education, Cultural Heritage, Tourism/Archaeology, Anthropology, Communications, or related).
  • Demonstrated experience delivering participatory trainings to youth (minimum 3 years recommended).
  • Proven knowledge and practical understanding of diversity, social cohesion, conflict sensitivity, and Positive Peace concepts.
  • Familiarity with Mosul/Nineveh context and the ability to contextualise content appropriately.
  • Ability to develop training materials and learning tools (agenda, session plans, assessments, reporting).
  • Strong facilitation skills in Arabic (Assyrian – also known as Syriac and Chaldean – and Kurdish are an asset).

 

Preferred Skills

  • Background in cultural heritage interpretation and/or tour guiding methodologies (ethical storytelling, inclusive narratives, site interpretation).
  • Experience integrating Tour Guides into learning and community engagement.
  • Strong gender-responsive facilitation skills and demonstrated ability to ensure equitable participation of young women.
  • Experience working with NGOs and familiarity with donor-funded reporting standards.
  • Understanding of safeguarding, PSEA, Do-No-Harm, and safe-space facilitation.
  • Coaching/mentoring approach (supporting participants to apply skills post-training).
