Job Description
Duties and Responsibilities
The Resident shall carry out clinical and other duties allocated to him/her by the Chief of Department and the Consultant to whom he / she is assigned.
The Resident shall supervise the house officer’s management of patients within the department and, if necessary, in the absence of house officers, carry out the basic house officer work.
The Resident shall check all admissions including cases admitted from the Emergency Department and OPD. A full history & physical examination shall be carried out, paying attention to the patient’s past health and current general health, meticulously documenting all details. Relevant routine and special Medical Laboratory Tests as appropriate shall be ordered. Written orders to the Nurses shall be given. The process of evaluating the patients under his/her care, formulating plans of investigation and treatment is accordingly to the level of responsibility achieved at the particular time.
The Resident shall take on-call duties according to the Departmental Duty Rota. He/she shall be the first on-call for all cases of his department and for all inpatients in his department requiring urgent attention after the usual morning rounds. He/she shall take special care of high-risk patient (e.g. critically ill, postoperative, etc) and shall immediately notify the Consultant of any complications.
The Resident on-call shall always inform the Consultant about the case to be admitted after having evaluated the patient and obtained and reviewed the pertinent Medical Laboratory data. If the case is urgent, the Resident shall immediately inform the Consultant.
The Resident shall be present in the Hospital at all times during his/her assigned on-call duty, and must not under any circumstances leave until he/she is relieved by the incoming on-call Resident or another Resident. When not on-call, he/she shall be present in the Hospital during normal working hours (7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.) and assist his/her assigned Consultant.
The Resident shall personally endorse his/her on-call activities including admissions, critical cases, etc. to the incoming Resident on-call either one to one or during the Morning Departmental Meeting.
The Resident shall visit patients under his/her care daily, write daily progress notes and orders as needed in the electronic file. All notes shall be dated, timed and signed. These will be reviewed and revised if necessary by the treating Consultant on the same day.
The Resident shall work with the Consultant he/she is assigned to at the discretion of the Chief of the Department. This includes ward rounds and outpatient clinics.
The Resident shall ensure that the appropriate informed consent is obtained for any intervention including certain Radiological procedures, Endoscopic procedures, Instrumental Delivery, Surgery, etc. according to the policies and procedures of the Hospital and his/her department.
The Resident shall assist the Consultant during procedures and can perform procedures appropriate to his/her level of experience, under the supervision of the Consultant.
The Resident shall write the discharge summaries of patients under his/her care. These shall be reviewed and co-signed by the Consultant.
The Resident shall actively participate in the other departmental activities including Clinical Presentations, Grand-Rounds, Radiology Meetings, Departmental Morbidity and Mortality Meetings, etc.
The Resident shall actively participate in the Continuous Medical Education Program of the Hospital and his/her department in the form of attending, assisting and participating in the educational activities of the hospital and his/her department including the write-up of case studies with management plan and detailed review of relevant literature with references. He/she shall attend specific Vocational Training arranged by the Chief of the Department in collaboration with the Director of Medical Education and Training.
